Spring will soon be arriving and with comes spring cleaning. Spring cleaning is an almost universal task of every family around the country. It is also a task that the average family procrastinates at until it becomes easier to just throw the winter wardrobe and items which do not fit in plastic totes and storage containers. The same process will occur in the fall as well. There is a simpler and more efficient method which will actually save time. Invest in a closet organizer or system.
There are primarily three different types of organizer closet systems and each has distinct advantages. The first is wire shelving, which is usually coated with a white rubbery plastic. The next type which is also commonly used is melamine laminate shelves and cubby racks. Both of these types allow a versatile and flexible arrangement when it comes to designing the placement or drawers, shelves, and closet rods.
Kids Cubby Storage
The first main advantage of wire storage systems are that they are able to be custom cut to any width and height that may be required. The other benefit is that because the shelving is wire and open, dust collecting is kept to a minimum. However, one challenge a home owner should be aware of is because these wire storage and shelf units are attached directly to the wall during installation, reinforcing parts of the wall at the securing brackets may be needed.
The reason behind this is because standard distances between wall studs are 16 inches on center. It can be very easy to not have a sud nearby at the point where a shelf support is required. It is never a good idea to rely on basic drywall anchors to support shelving and clothing rods without proper support. Over time, the consistent weight of clothing and whatever is usually shoved on to upper shelves can easily cause the drywall to weaken and give way.
Similar to the flexibility of wire organizer systems, melamine laminate shelving is almost as versatile with regards to freedom of drawer placement, shelf position, and cubby hole location. Usually the length of shelving comes in standardized lengths. Two key differences are with regards to a variety of different finishes from which to choose. The most widely available color finishes tend to be white, light maple, or dark brown. The other possible small limitation is that there may be a very narrow section of closet space that can go unused with this type of arrangement. One key advantage is that melamine shelving units can be freestanding and self supporting without needing to be secured or mounted to the wall, however, it is always recommended to do so from a safety stand point, especially should young children be present in the household.
The third type of closet system takes the best of both wire shelf units and melamine shelving and truly provides 100% versatility with no wasted space. Custom designed wood or wood veneered cabinets, drawers, and cubby holes can make use of every square inch of the available closet space with any dimensions required. It is quite common to find custom designed organizer units in luxury homes, but more frequently, the average home owner is demanding the same luxury as prices have dropped. What once was prohibitively expensive, can be had by the everyday hard working family.
One piece of advice that many individuals should heed is while the finished product allows for easy use and organization, actually assembling and installing even the simplest of shelf layouts can easily take a home owner several hours. With more drawers, cabinets, and shelves, comes more labor intensive struggle which could evolve into days. Closet organizing systems look deceptively easy to install, but the fact is a professional installer should always be able to install any system in half the time as a layperson and save the home owner much frustration and money from costly mistakes.
