Kitchen Organization - Solutions, Strategies and Rules to Organize The Kitchen

Good kitchen organization means making the kitchen into the functional room it's supposed to be. You cook in the kitchen. So your first goal when organizing the kitchen is to streamline cooking processes. You want efficiency and ease when cooking so it's a smooth, enjoyable experience for you.

Kids Cubby Storage

The second major thing you do in the kitchen is store food. So your second kitchen organization goal is to be able to see at a glance what's in your kitchen food cabinets or pantry and what needs to be replenished. Plus you want to store food so it stays sealed properly and fresh.

Kids Cubby Storage

Third, you clean up after cooking and eating in the kitchen. And this is a tiring task as it is so make it as quick and easy as possible to do.

Finally, you might eat in the kitchen. But you won't find too many kitchen organization rules that apply to this task since this is mostly just about enjoying the end product from cooking.

So how do you meet the first three kitchen organization goals?

First, permanently remove anything from the kitchen that doesn't belong there. This might include book bags, purses, coats, books or any other item you or family members regularly set on kitchen counters or on the table. Do not ever bring these items back into the kitchen. Make permanent homes for these type items in your foyer or entryway halls and closets using cubbies, baskets, containers or over-the-door plastic pocket organizers.

Now start streamlining your cooking area. Put items you most use when cooking near the work counter and stove and oven. This will be items that you use every day. If you don't use the blender every day, why is it in your prime counter work spot? Because it looks pretty isn't a good organizational reason. If you do use that measuring cup most days, why do you have to walk across the room to a far cabinet to retrieve it? Put it in the cabinet above your cooking preparation area.

Take a good look at what's in your prime cooking and work area now. Decide what needs to move into that area and what needs to move out of the area, while still remaining somewhere in the kitchen. You also may find a few kitchen items that are one too many, such as 10 frying pans and eight spatulas. Get rid of the excess items by donating them.

For your second goal of storing food so you can view it a glance and replenish items as needed you can do things like turn all the food items in your kitchen food closet so that labels are facing you. Also cluster these dry goods into similar groups of items such as vegetables in one section and can soup in another. Empty multiple boxes of the same pastas and rice into translucent plastic storage containers.

Also, you might want to place a magnetic basket on your fridge with a pad and pencil in it. Use it to jot down items you use the last of in the kitchen. When it's time to make a trip to the supermarket, you'll know just what you need.

Your third goal in the kitchen is clean-up. Keep your kitchen clean-up items such as dishwasher detergent, scrubber pads, gloves and more under the sink in a single pull out utility caddy. Use two if necessary. And don't "steal" items such as the cleanser back and forth between rooms. Get a separate cleaning caddy for the bathroom cleaning supplies.

Remember, kitchen organization is all about putting "function" back into this work space and streamlining the organization to suit your functional tasks. Making using your kitchen convenient, efficient, and even relaxing.

The 5 Best Places to Put A Decorative Wall Mount Coat Rack

Have you considered the possibility of a wall mount coat rack as a decorative item? Basically, this item functions as a place to hang coats, as opposed to slinging them over a chair. It is also great for hanging the jackets of house guests as they enter.

Kids Cubby Storage

Form follows function, a common design phrase, often applies here. The phrase "wall mount coat rack" brings to mind the image of a rectangular hunk of wood, with metal hooks or wooden pegs to hold coats.

Kids Cubby Storage

However, a unique decorative model adds a charming touch to your home. Not only do they feature whimsical designs to liven up your space, but decorative coat racks also serve as functional pieces of art. With many unique choices, there is an option for every space, not just the ones you would typically consider.

Where are the best places to mount a decorative coat rack?

Right inside the front door: For logical reasons, this is the one place you have considered placing a coat rack. Not only is it convenient for guests, but a decorative rack will be an instant conversation piece. If your front door enters into a formal living area, consider something appropriate for your decor. Or, if your room features a particular theme, there is undoubtedly a design to match.

In the basement: If you enter the basement through a separate door, dress up the space with a decorative wall mount coat rack. When you arrive home from work, simply hanging your coat inside the door gives you one less thing to worry about. Plus, your coat will be there waiting tomorrow, when you have to get up and do it all over again. Many basements serve as family game rooms, lending themselves to fun designs, like one made of brass, featuring miniature pool balls on each hook.

In the bedroom: Kids have a tendency to toss their things wherever when they come home from school. A decorative rack gives them a proper place to hang their sweaters, jackets, and backpacks. For added organizational storage, choose a model with a shelf, or cubby holes designed to hold shoes, books, and school supplies.

For adults, a decorative wall mount rack is great for hanging robes, house coats, and accessories. Keep jewelry tangle-free, or organize handbags for a quick view of your inventory.

In the bathroom: If a wall mounted coat rack supports heavy coats, why not use it to hang bathroom towels? Mounted directly beside the shower, towels stay within reach, or it can be mounted on the door, if you prefer. Whereas towel bars only accommodate a couple of bath towels, a coat rack with four hooks conveniently holds the whole family's towels.

Finding a fun design to match most bathroom decor is easy, whether a whimsical fish or seashell design, or fabulous floral, is more your taste.

In the kitchen: In the kitchen, a wall mount rack is perfect for displaying antique kitchen utensils, or hanging pots and pans for quick access. Again, select something to match the style of your kitchen, whether contemporary, or country. Perfect designs for the kitchen range from roosters to contemporary scrolls.

Modern designs feature offset hooks, which allow for attractive display of cookware. A quick internet search turns up so many designs, finding one to suit you is easy. Decorative wall mount coat racks are coat racks in name only. Uses for a rack are only limited by your imagination. While traditional coat racks serve a purpose, decorative ones serve many, because they hang outer wear (or anything) in a way that is convenient, interesting, and stylish.

Mudroom Madness

Is your mudroom, hallway, foyer or entry way making you mad?

Kids Cubby Storage

Do you constantly trip over everything on the floor?

Kids Cubby Storage

Is there no space to put anything?

Or has your clutter been like this so long that you just pass by and not really see what your guests see?

You may just spend minutes coming or going but this brief time can definitely set the tone for the start or end of your working day.

Nothing says welcome like entering into a space where you feel comfortable and can easily store your coat, shoes and outerwear items. Think about your home's entry and incorporate these ideas to help keep it in top shape and keep you sane:

1. Give each family member a space: limit the amount each person can keep there (number of shoes, bags, etc.). Locker-like cubbies, milk crates or laundry baskets are great and can work well depending on the space. Allow only items that are used frequently and for that season in this area. Have adjustable shelves and hooks to grow with your child. Think about what is reachable for your child when deciding where to hang hooks and put baskets. Square cubbies are great for kids' extra-curricular supplies and equipment; even shallow cubbies are helpful for stashing things away.

2. Have a place to sit to put on shoes. A bench with storage under the seat is a great multi-purpose item. A chest or toy box can make a great bench/storage option, too. Or tuck bins under a bench or chairs. This is a great place to keep sports equipment. Be diligent about keeping this seat clutter-free so you will always have a spot to quickly sit to lace up your shoes.

3.Provide enough hooks. Make sure that there is at least one hook per family member (an easy alternative to nagging kids to hang up coats). Strong hooks are also great to get book bags off the floor. Use big hooks for heavy coats and small ones for umbrellas and hats. Don't forget the family dog! Have a hook for his leash. Hooks can also be placed on the back of doors. Hooks are a great way to tap into unused storage space- the walls and doors. Make sure the kids' hooks are at their level and the adults can use the upper space.

4. Create a specific area for your pets. In one spot store leashes, waste bags, outside toys, treats, a cloth to wipe paws and winter paw protector or booties. Think about opting for bag holders that attach to the leash, collapsible water bowls and treat or ball bags that clip on your belt to save your pockets from an overflow of plastic bags and 'cookie' crumbs. Have reflective bands for you and your dog for nighttime outings-especially important in fall and winter as the days become shorter. You may also wish to consider a place to stash indoor toys on your way out.

5.Think up, way up. Build a custom cabinet up to the ceiling to maximize storage of out of season items higher up. If you are working with the closet you have, use labeled bins and boxes for seldom used or out of season items and store higher up. Consider adding an extra shelf above the existing ones. Could you double rod the closet - adults coats on the top - children's below. If you do not have a front closet, you must be particularly selective about what you keep in your entrance. Think seasonal - what do I really need right now? Keep things for this time of year and store the rest elsewhere in your house.

6. Watch out for wet items. Allow each family member to have only one pair of shoes out at a time on a boot rack. Once a pair is dry it should be put away. Wet mittens and hats can be hung by clothes pins on a line that runs vertically or horizontally--thread line through pins' spring, spacing them along the line, or use a pretty piece of 1 inch ribbon that they will easily clip to. Hang this mini clothesline close to a heat vent or heater. Again, once dry, these items should be stashed away.

7. Make a message centre. A bulletin board nearby, will help keep your family on schedule. Pin forms, invitations, practice schedules, and a calendar. This will help you remember to grab these items on the way out.

8. Check yourself out - add a mirror. Not only does it help make the space appear larger, it is convenient for you to give yourself a once-over before rushing out the door. It will help you catch turned up collars, food in teeth and hat-head. Get a mirror that has a small ledge for lipstick and a comb.

9. Give some careful thought to every item in the mudroom. Use waterproof paint and tile floors to deal with the moisture that will be coming in. Allow lots of natural light in and install ceiling light for nighttime entrances. If there is something there that doesn't serve a purpose, remove it. Space is at a premium in the mudroom, so make sure you have a rationale for all your choices.

It may be a little space, but a little time and thought can rid you of the aggravation and madness of your mudroom.

Laundry Room Designs - A Wish List to Make Laundry Day More Efficient

Why is it that dingy basement laundry room designs are the norm?

Kids Cubby Storage

Ever since families started washing their own clothes in their own home instead of taking it out  laundry day chores have been relegated to out of the way places like the basement or the garage.

Kids Cubby Storage

I think that good laundry room designs would at least require that the laundry center in the home would be placed close to where the dirty clothes are taken off at the end off each day! The last time I did laundry none of it came from the garage!

Laundry coordinators in every home (you know who you are) have been lugging piles of  washing to the basement or the garage for decades and I think it is time to start planning for laundry room designs that are user friendly for the entire family. The average North American family does anywhere from 7-10 loads of laundry a week so it is a chore that takes up considerable time in family life. It is time to take a look at sensible laundry room designs. Let's face it if you have to do your own washing, you will want it to be as pleasant a chore as possible. At the very least good planning should remove some of the unpleasantness that currently goes along with laundry day.

Good laundry room designs should provide for convenience for the entire  process and not just washing and drying. The entire process includes sorting, washing, drying, folding, and ironing so here is my wish list for a laundry room makeover.

Stacked full size washer and dryer - Any space over the washer or dryer is wasted space. Even if you put shelves or cupboards up there you would have to be a gorilla to reach into them. Sound insulation - I might have to do laundry but I do not want to be reminded of it all the time by the noise of the machines. A laundry room designed just for laundry - Ever notice how laundry rooms get messy with dirty clothes and laundry hampers strewn about? My dream laundry center will be just for laundry so that I do not have to trip over other things (basketballs, runners, coats, snowsuits, galoshes etc) on laundry day. A laundry center close to where the "inputs" are! - Why can't the laundry center be close to the bedrooms? That's where most of the laundry comes from!  Think how much time can be saved if the trip  from the bedroom is a short one! Special "cubbies" assigned to each family member - Clean folded clothing could be placed there for them to put away in their own room. A horizontal work surface - Just large enough to use for folding towels, sheets, or t-shirts Cabinets and shelving - Supplies like soap, bleach, and stain remover are best hidden behind closed doors! Preferably in a vertical cabinet space beside the stackable machines Drying Area - Or some small space or drying rack to hang up clothing that needs to be air dried A supply of buttons and thread - It would be most convenient to be able to sew on a button right away when you notice it is loose.  A drop down ironing board - Who likes setting up the ironing board?  And have you ever noticed that once it is set up it stays there? and everything gets piled on it so you cannot even use it for ironing. I would like to have my ironing board ready to go and the iron already plugged in so I could just turn it on with a flick of a switch! Laundry tub - A place for soaking or pre-treating stains or soaking some of those bigger items like sheer draperies A few spare bins and/or storage baskets for orphaned socks - You never know, the missing mate just might show up on the next laundry day!

If laundry day has to be a part of contemporary life, it can certainly be made a lot more enjoyable by good laundry room designs!
